What If There Was No Such Thing As Sport?

We’ve been spoiled for choice this Bank Holiday weekend. At one point I had both laptops and the TV showing a combination of snooker, cricket and hockey while using my smart phone to listen to 5 Live’s coverage of the football.

A strange and disturbing thought crossed my mind when I wondered what it would be like if there were no sport? I’d be in all sorts of bother as I would have no job, little excuse for social interaction and of course nothing really to write about.

Anyway, I thought I would make a few observations following the weekend’s action:

Snooker: Nobody can live with Ronnie when he’s giving it his all and he will surely wrap up a fourth world title in quick time later today.

Football: I said at the start of the year that Man Utd would hold off City to win the title but it’s looking highly unlikely now. What I will say is that if City do go on to win, they won’t do it the easy way.

Hockey: Massive congratulations to the Great Britain Women for winning the Olympic Test event but I thought both men and women show an alarming tendency to try to Barcelona it out of defence. It did for Swansea at Old Trafford and it might well do for them against stronger teams. The men performed reasonably well to finish third but were unable to respond to an Australian tactic of pressing high throughout the game – something that often happens at the level I play.

Cricket: I went for the Mumbai Indians to win the tournament at the outset and they produced a miraculous performance to beat Chennai yesterday. Dwayne Smith is another player who should be playing for the West Indies and I suspect he will be when they name their ODI/T20I squads soon. AB de Villiers is a genius but I loved Dale Steyn’s reaction to being slaughtered by his compatriot in yesterday’s late game:
