I think it is finished. 30,326 words later, 1,309 Days Later now has all the bits in it ready to be published. Well, almost all of the bits. I still have to add photos and an end-of-season review page for each chapter but it’s an incredible feeling to have finally got to the end of the journey.
And it’s looking extremely likely that I will get it published – at least to the Kindle – in time for the Olympics opening ceremony.
A couple of extracts from the final chapters to whet the appetite:
“The lead didn’t last long as Horncastle broke on the left wing, outnumbering our defence and beating Leadenham from close range. Our luck deserted us in comical fashion soon after when David Nix’s shot hit Hollingworth in the head instead of troubling the goalkeeper. Hollingworth bravely played on and continued to cause problems up front even though further goals eluded us.
“If any time was more likely to score, it was the home side, but it took us defenders to clear, block and save a series of short corners to keep the scores level. Horncastle had a goal disallowed, the umpires eventually deciding that the ball hadn’t travelled the required distance before being played into the circle. It was a reprieve, no doubt, and we came away relieved to have avoided defeat…..”
…….”Braunton scored after a short corner, Groom tucked one away and the goal that put the icing on the promotion-winning cake was scored by Phillips, who secured a hat-trick for good measure. Two years earlier, his twin brother Adam had scored the hat-trick that ended our 1,309-day long wait for a league win. This hat-trick ensured that we had gone from the bottom of a big pile to the top of a smaller one; and we had done it in style – with two games to spare.
